Etienne, former biker turned cyclist, answered our questions!

22 January 2019

" As I have 30 years of motorcycling behind me, I no doubt have very bad habits and ride a bike as I would ride a motorcycle. It’s not the least dangerous way to learn about the road. "

  • Can you introduce yourself in a few words?

My name is Etienne, I’m 58 years old. For 30 years, I lived in the suburbs and made the journey back and forth by motorcycle. It's been five years since I moved back to Brussels and I find that riding a bike is complicated!

  • What is the biggest challenge of cycling in Brussels?

As I have 30 years of motorcycling behind me, I no doubt have very bad habits and ride a bike as I would ride a motorcycle. It’s not the least dangerous way to learn about the road.

  • What made you want to do Bike Experience training?

Just to learn the hints and tips to cycle in traffic and more safely. To save time, have fun cycling, learn quickly. To be aware of my faults and correct them.

  • What’s your main reason for doing the training?

The car traffic. I am often told "I didn’t see you". My concern isn’t that you didn’t see me, but that you didn’t look. When you come out of a restricted one-way street, people don’t expect to see a bike.
